Playground Safety
I am thinking of getting a sandbox for my children.
Any recommendations? Can I use any kind of
sand? Are they sanitary?
Sandboxes
Look for sterilized “natural sand” labeled for use in children’s
sandboxes. Avoid any sand that contains crystalline silica,
which is known to cause cancer. Avoid any light powdery
artificial sand because it may contain rocks, chunks, and
materials made of asbestos.

Your sandbox should have a drainage system.

Place the sandbox away from moving equipment such as
slides and swings.

Keep sandboxes covered when not in use. If sand gets
contaminated (cat or any wild animal feces), do not attempt
to clean or sterilize the sand; just simply replace it.
Contaminated sand can spread diseases such as ringworm
or bacterial infections. Sand in your sandbox should be
replaced as needed and at least every two year
